My Childhood Fantasy

this is the first image i have done for my digital imaging class. it probably deserves a little explanation:

the original photo was a picture from my mother and father's wedding day. i have never met my dad, and he died when i was 14. we had absolutely no contact when he was alive. my mom and dad were divorced when i was 6 months old and he completely disappeared from my life, save for a monthly child support check.

in order to deal with the fact that my daddy wasn't around, i would concoct fantasies in my head about what my dad was. i remember thinking that my dad must be superman. as a child, this idea comforted me. it made sense that daddy couldn't be around if i imagined him as superman. superman is out saving the world. and in a way, i could look at my mom's boyfriends as clark kent. it seems so silly, but as a child it's just a way to cope with feelings of neglect.

i chose to create this image as a reminder of who i am as a person. i kept the content as light hearted and childish as possible, without losing it's deeper meaning. it was, afterall, a humorous notion.
